Overview

The Slash 4x4 VXL has been in continuous production since 2009 and is arguably the single most popular electric RC on the planet. The current version includes Traxxas' factory-installed Extreme Heavy Duty Upgrade Kit (Maxx-duty driveshafts, HD suspension arms, steel wheel hubs, reinforced shock towers) making it the strongest Slash driveline ever offered. The Velineon VXL-3s brushless system delivers 60+ mph on 3S LiPo with Traxxas Stability Management (TSM) keeping it pointed straight. A clipless body mount, modular monocoque chassis that separates with 5 screws, and Traxxas Link app telemetry round out the feature set. It's not the fastest or the most exotic option in its scale, but no RC has better parts availability — every hobby shop on earth stocks Slash spares.

The Verdict

What's good

  • Unmatched parts availability — global hobby shop standard
  • TSM stability control makes extreme power accessible
  • Clipless body system — fastest battery swap in the game
  • Traxxas Link app telemetry built in
  • Holds resale value extraordinarily well

Watch out for

  • Chassis design is aging — newer platforms handle better
  • Plastic chassis flexes under 3S hard launches
  • Stock body crack-prone on hard impacts
  • Traxxas iD battery system locks you into their ecosystem

Who it's for

Known Issues

Rear hub carriers can crack with enough jump abuse — aftermarket aluminum is a popular upgrade. Stock body is thin and curbs it on edges; a Pro-Line Jeep Comanche or Chevy Blazer body is both a style and durability upgrade.

Common Mods

Pro-Line bodies (Jeep Comanche, Chevy Blazer, Ford Raptor), RPM rear A-arms, aluminum steering blocks, LCG (low CG) chassis conversion for racing, aftermarket shock towers.

Still the GOAT after all these years

On my third Slash 4x4 VXL across 10 years. First one lived a full life, second one I handed down to my nephew, third one is current. Nothing else combines this level of speed, toughness, and parts availability. Is there faster? Yes. Is there more modern? Yes. Is there anything you can repair at 9pm on a Sunday from an Amazon 2-day shipment? No. That's the Slash's superpower.
