Overview

Yokomo's YD-2 line has been the de facto standard for competitive RWD drift since 2015, and the SXIII (launched 2022) is the third-generation refinement of the SX variant — Yokomo's highest-trim, high-angle chassis. Compared to the previous SXII, the SXIII features a lower chassis, improved Ackermann steering geometry, and cleaner kit-build ergonomics. It ships as a kit only — no electronics included — because serious drifters want to pick their own motor, ESC, servo, and gyro. Expect a 4-6 hour build. On the floor it's plantable, high-angle capable (45°+), and infinitely adjustable. This is the chassis competition team drivers actually run.

The Verdict

What's good

  • Reference-quality drift chassis used in competition
  • Deep Japanese and US aftermarket support
  • Highly adjustable geometry (Ackermann, camber, droop)
  • Holds value extraordinarily well on resale
  • Kit build builds serviceability knowledge

Watch out for

  • Not a beginner chassis — learning curve is steep
  • Requires separate gyro purchase ($80-150)
  • Parts are pricier than Chinese clones
  • Long kit build required before first drive
  • Setup sensitivity rewards experience

Known Issues

Stock gears are plastic — fine for practice, mandatory hardened steel upgrade for competition. Shock shafts bend if you tank the car into a barrier at high angle; order a spare set. Stock servo saver is acceptable but most drifters disable it entirely.

Common Mods

Yokomo YG-302 or Sanwa SRG-CL1 gyro, Hobbywing Xerun 13.5T brushless, Sanwa PGS-XR steering servo, hardened steel gear set, carbon upper arms, front one-way bearing for counter-steer style, Overdose or D-Like aluminum hubs.

Competition-ready out of the kit

Third YD-2 I've built (SX, SXII, now SXIII). This SXIII generation is noticeably better than the SXII — the chassis feels more planted, steering response is cleaner, and the kit build is significantly less fiddly. My team runs these almost exclusively. The Hobbywing 10.5T combo is the standard pairing. Don't cheap out on the gyro — a good one (YG-302 or Sanwa SRG-CL1) makes 80% of the car. Build it, don't skip the hardened gear swap, and don't expect it to be forgiving — it's a competition chassis, not a toy.
